Can't afford art school? – Tips for self taught Concept Artists.

Not everyone can afford to go to art school. The good news is that concept artists are hired based on their skill not their degree. So here are a few ideas on how you can improve on your own and teach yourself concept art. Unfortunately you’re going to have to assess your own weaknesses, and formulate your own curriculum.
-Assess your strengths and weaknesses.
-Constantly schedule time to improve on your weaknesses.
-Schedule your own projects based on games you love. Set up a daily routine as if you’re already a concept artist on those projects, and the fan forums are your audience.
– Run with your successes, and keep doing them in order to keep enthusiastic about your craft.
-Improve your skillset EVERY day with tutorials from pros.
– Get feedback from gamers who play the games you want to design for.

I've been consuming your videos immensely recently to help me improve since my art is nowhere near the level it should be. They're very motivating!!

I'm wondering if I should even try to go to an art college. I could go for another passion of mine at a cheaper school, but at the end of the day I'd much, much rather be a video game artist. But the other degree would likely mean a more stable job (that I could go into private practice with)- but, at the same time, video game art is my passion. Granted, I could theoretically do both, too… but at the same time, it would hard to be a cosplayer, video game artist, and have another job at the same time.

Could someone potencially be employed as a concept artist based solely on its portfolio? Without all the educational side of it?

Hi Trent! I'm a little late on this video but, I was wondering what kind of art courses would you recommend to people who can afford art school? Great video, keep up the good work.

I am a young Single mother here, i just started to get into concept art, come back here every time I feel lost, I watch this video many times to remind myself when I feel burn out or other videos and tutorials on Gumroad, but I been making time to practice and sacrifice some sleep too to practice and dissecting but I do feel lost sometimes so hearing trent’s wisdom helps motivate me a lot.

You know what? You absolutely cannot mentor us about Twilight Monk and let us absorb your style more with daily videos.
    Did that work?

You were an inspiration for me as a kid because you weren't much older than me, when you got in the business at 16 years old with Creed. The way you made those characters look is one of the reasons I wanted to keep going. Even back then your shit was epic! I'm glad I found your channel!

I know that this video is almost a year old (so I REALLY hope you see this) but, I am currently in college for game development right now, and I was hoping for some advice. My #1 goal is to make a character for league of legends. So do you think if i change majors to like animation (or something along those lines) that I can still be a concept artist? My biggest issue is that I have no idea how to use Photoshop. Where do I start learning? I have watched quite a few of your videos because I love the advice you give, and you inspire me. I talked with my instructor and they told me (because I had no idea) that making a character is never just a one person job and that honestly (I'm not just being dramatic) made me question my whole career choice. I want to draw characters and get paid to draw them. I would like to see a creation of mine hit the live servers one day, but if the only part of my character that I made hits the live server is the guns I drew or just they eyes and they change everything else about it I would be so crushed and broken (I'm sure it doesn't happen exactly like that but I hope you get my point). So what should I do? Sorry for rambling i guess to boil it back down to my original question(s?) Can I be a concept artist for video games even if I don't major in Game Development? And how do I learn how to master (or at least novice?) in Photoshop if I don't know a lick about it.

    P.S I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
P.S.S I'm sorry for being a bother XD
P.S.S.S Thanks for reading 🙂 (if you do T_T)

Do you have recommendations for how to improve for someone who doesn't have alot of time to do this? I'm doing PhD in an engineering field with no intention to quit, so obviously, that will be my career path. I look at stuff that Feng Zhu does and I do want to be at least 1/5 as good, but sadly I don't have much time to spend painting and doing focused exercises.

I see mainly a lot of human concept art and I was wondering since I have no interest in drawing people, do I HAVE to know how to draw people to be a concept artist? I can draw creatures that are close enough to humans such as werewolves however.
